Jo Dee Messina, Tim McGraw's protégé, went from number one to bottom and number one again in less than two years. The Massachusetts-born is a multi-award-winning singer and actress.
Career
She began singing in musical plays at the age of eight, but discovered country music at the age of twelve and became obsessed with legendary country singer Dolly Parton.
At the age of 19, she moved to Nashville in pursuit of greater exposure and regularly sang for cash prizes in local talent competitions. Jo was signed to Curb Records after a bizarre suggestion by Tim McGraw.
Her self-titled debut album, which sold over half a million copies and was certified gold by the RIAA, was released in 1996.
Some of her other notable studio albums are “Me” (2014), “Delicious Surprise” (2005), and “Burn” (2000).
As an actress, she is best known for her roles in the films "Driven" (2001) and "Evan Almighty" (2007).
Achievements
As of 2021, the country music artist has two Grammy nominations in the category “Best Female Country Performance” in 2001 and “Best Country Collaboration with Vocals” in 2002.
The singer was the first female country artist to have three songs chart at number one for multiple weeks from the same album titled “I’m Alright”.
In 1999, she won three Billboard Magazine honors – “Outstanding Female Vocalist”, “Outstanding Country Act”, and “Most Played Country Female Artist of the Year”.
Country Music Association Awards bestowed upon her the “Horizon Award” in 1999.

She was romantically involved with Don Muzquiz for some time before she started dating Chris Deffenbaugh, a businessman from New Mexico. In 2007, she tied the knot with Deffenbaugh.
