About Jimmy Greaves
Jimmy Greaves will be remembered for his illustrious career as a soccer star. The late English icon is largely regarded as one of the most famous and enduring personalities the sport has ever seen.
He is also considered by many as one of the greatest goal scorers in the history of the sport. In addition to his clinical finishing, Greaves was also noted for his amazing pace, positional skills and acceleration.
Club Career
Greaves joined Chelsea’s youth team in 1955 and was promoted to the club’s senior squad in 1957. He made over 150 appearances as a senior squad player of Chelsea, scoring 124 goals in the process.
He joined fellow London soccer club Tottenham Hotspurs in 1961 and went on to become a legend, scoring 220 goals in 321 appearances for the club. He left Tottenham, in 1970, for West Ham and registered 13 goals in 38 games for the Hammers.
International Career
To many England fans Greaves will always be regarded as one of their biggest stars. He contributed immensely to his country’s national teams.
He scored 13 goals in 12 games for England’s under 23 national team. He made his debut for the under 23 side in a 6-2 victory over Bulgaria. He netted two goals during the game.
For his country’s senior national team, Greaves made his debut in May 1959 in England’s 4-1 loss to Peru. He scored the only goal for his country. He went on to play 56 more games for England’s senior national team scoring 43 goals during those games.
Broadcasting Career
After the English legend hung his boots, he did not leave the sport entirely. He took up a job in soccer punditry and appeared on a number of sport programs on TV.
He was hired as a pundit for 1982’s FIFA World Cup coverage by London-based TV network ITV. He co-hosted ITV’s famous soccer program “Saint and Greavsie” alongside fellow England soccer star Ian St John.
Greaves appeared as a pundit on ATV’s popular soccer show “Star Soccer”.
He also worked as a columnist for numerous newspapers including The Sunday People and The Sun.
Achievements
He was part of England’s historic 1966 World Cup winning squad, which was captained by legend, Bobby Moore. He also won two FA Cups with Tottenham in 1962 and 1967.
He scored six hat-tricks during his playing days with England, making him the only player to do so as of 2021.
Family Life
He tied the knot, in March 1958, with Irene Barden. His first child, Jimmy Jr, died as an infant. He had other children namely Mitzi, Andrew, Lynn, and Danny. The latter played professional football.
Facts
During a period in his career he struggled with alcoholism. In 2012 he underwent surgery to correct a mild stroke.
In 2003 he released his autobiography entitled “Greavsie”.
Aside from soccer-related activities, Greaves was also known for investing in various businesses including a packing company and a travel agency.
One thing special about Greaves was his ability to score on most of his debut games. He scored in his first international games for England. He also netted on his debut game with Chelsea.
He missed the final game of the 1966 World Cup due to injury.
