About Jim Lovell
James Arthur Lovell Jr., popularly referred to as Jim Lovell, had originally been trained as a naval aviator and test pilot prior to becoming an astronaut. After his medical results disqualified him from being selected for Project Mercury in 1958, he tried again in 1962 and became a member of NASA Astronaut Group 2. As a member, he flew in Gemini 7 and 12 in 1965 and 1966, respectively and piloted Apollo 8 in 1968. He also commanded the near-fatal Apollo 13 mission.
Family Life
He was born as an only child to Blanche and James Lovell Sr. He has been married to Marilyn Lillie Gerlach since 1952. They have four children together.
Achievements
He was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom and Congressional Space Medal of Honor.
Trivia
He co-authored “Lost Moon: The Perilous Voyage of Apollo 13”, which was adapted into the film “Apollo 13”.
