About Jim Carroll
Jim Carroll was still a high school student when he established himself as a poet through his first poetry collection, “Organic Trains”. Born James Dennis Carroll, he was also an author, punk musician and autobiographer. He is remembered best for his autobiographical novel, “The Basketball Diaries”, which was published in 1978 and chronicles his basketball career in high school and his heroin addiction. As a musician, he founded and performed in the Band “The Jim Carroll Band” which is known for the song “People Who Died”.
Family Life
He was raised in the Lower East Side, Manhattan, New York City until the age of 11 when he moved to Inwood, Upper Manhattan with his family. From 1978 to 1986, he was married to Rosemary Klemfuss.
Death
He died on September 11, 2009 from a heart attack while at his desk working. He had been struggling with hepatitis C and pneumonia.
