About Jiang Zemin
Jiang Zemin’s love for politics started during his time in college. His journey to prominence began in 1985 when he was elected as Shanghai’s Mayor. A member of the Communist Party of China, he was made the leader of the party’s branch in Shanghai.
He gradually rose through the ranks and was appointed as the party’s General Secretary in 1989. While serving in that position, he was elected China’s President in 1993 and held the post for a decade. As the president, he was credited for transforming the economy of the country. He’s also celebrated for claiming Hong Kong from the hands of the United Kingdom.
Family
He was raised by his uncle Jiang Shangqing, who died during the Second World War. His biological parents were called Jiang Shijun and Wu Yueqing.
He married his sweetheart, Wang Yeping in 1949. Together, they had two children named Jiang Miankang and Jiang Mianheng, who became ShanghaiTech University’s first President.
Education
He attended the National Central University where he studied Electrical Engineering. He also studied at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (formally National Chiao Tung University).
Accolades
Throughout his active days as a politician, Zemin received lots of honors which include the Medal of Pushkin (Russia), Grand Cross of the Order of the Redeemer (Greece) and Grand Cross of the Order of the Southern Cross (Brazil).
Trivia
Before pursuing a career in politics, he worked at a number of companies such as First Automobile Works, and Russia’s Stalin Automobile Works.
In 2019, he became the first politician to serve as China’s paramount leader for the longest period of time.
