Jesús Garcia Corona was the Mexican railroad brakeman who saved the people of Nacozari from dynamite explosion in the 1900s. Known as “el heroe de Nacozari, Jesus Garcia is a celebrated hero in Nacozari and the world of railroad workers.
Family and Background
Hermosillo, Sonora is the proud hometown of this Mexican hero. He was born on 13th November, 1881 with little information about his parents.
Career in the railroad sector
By age 17, he got a job with Moctezuma Copper Company as a waterboy. With time he advanced in rank and was promoted from switchman to brakeman and finally fireman. He worked as a brakeman for the train that ran between Nacozari, Sonora, and Douglas, Arizona.
Heroism
On November 7, 1907, he was taking a break when he saw smoke in the air, realizing that his train's chimney stack had been blown, sparking the hay on top. With the train transporting 70 boxes of dynamite, fuses and detonators. Garcia jumped on board slamming the train into reverse, attempting to get the ill-fated train away from the populace before the collision occurred. The incident took the lives of 13 people including himself.
Honors
The Nacozari town changed its name to Nacozari de Garcia to honor Jesús García’s heroism. Also monuments and statues were built in his honor.
He was honored by the American Red Cross as “Hero of Humanity”.
Every November 7 when Mexican railroad workers celebrate the “Dia de Ferrocarrilero” (Railroader’s Day), his name gets mentioned for his selfless sacrifice.
