About Jerzy Grotowski
Jerzy Grotowski was a Polish-born director of theatre artists who devised innovative ways to relay the story to the audience. He is also best known for the Grotowski method, which is used in theatre today.
Childhood
World War II broke out in 1939, and young Grotowski, at the tender age of 6, had to flee with his family from his home town Rzeszow in southeastern Poland. After settling in Nienadówka, Grotowski spent most of his childhood imitating his favorite acts. He attended the Ludwik Solski Academy of Dramatic Arts and the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts to further develop his talents.
Career and the Grotowski Method
Grotowski made his debut as a director in 1957 with a play called "Gods of Rain". He then founded his own theatre company called the Theatre Laboratory, where he created compelling productions such as "Apocalypsis Cum Figures" and "Orpheus".
He created the Grotowski method, which has influenced a lot of modern theatre productions today. The method teaches directors how to use the body so that the entirety of the story can be told with just body movements and nonverbal sounds.
