He was born to J.W. and Arminta Jones. In 1963, he got married to Eugenia Jones, with whom he fathered three children: Charlotte, Jerry, Jr. and Stephen Jones.

In 1989, he purchased the Cowboys for $140 million and transformed it into a multibillion dollar team. With an estimated value of $4 billion, the Cowboys was ranked #1 on Forbes' 2016 list of the most valuable sports teams.
