About Jens Stoltenberg
Jens Stoltenberg is undoubtedly one of the most revered politicians and diplomats of the 21st century. As of June 2022, he was the secretary-general of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) after being elected in 2014. In addition, he is a renowned Norwegian politician, having served as Norway’s 34th prime minister and a vibrant member of the Labour Party.
Background & Early Life
He was born in Oslo, Norway, and is the son of prominent Norway politician Thorvald Stoltenberg. He is a former student of the Oslo Cathedral School and Oslo Waldorf School. In addition, he holds a “Candidatus economics” degree from the University of Oslo. He initially worked as a journalist and, after graduating, served as an executive officer for the Norwegian National Statistical Institute.
Political Positions
From 1985 until 1989, he was the head of the Labour party’s youth section. However, he received his first Norwegian government appointment in 1990 as a state secretary at the ministry of the environment. In 1993, he was elected to the revered “Storting.” Then between 1993 and 1997, he served as the Minister of Finance and Minister of Industry and Energy. Finally, he served as Norway’s Prime Minister between 2000 and 2001 and from 2005 to 2013.
NATO
Under his leadership, NATO has implemented the largest collective defense reinforcement since the “Cold War” and broadened its eastern alliances and European Union affiliations.
