Jennifer Holliday is an actress and singer from America. She started her career on Broadway in 1979 when she was just 18 years old.
Acting and Singing Career
As an actress, the first role she played was in the film titled “Your Arms Too Short to Box with God”. Holliday gained media recognition at age 21 when she starred in “Dreamgirls” as Effie Melody White. Her theater appearances include “Grease” in 1995, “Like Jazz” in 2003 and “The Color Purple” in 2014.
As a singer, Holliday made her singing debut in the early 1980s with her version of the soundtrack “And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going”. Due to the successful sale of the song, she rose to prominence. She has released several singles and albums such as “Say You Love Me” in 1985, “Get Close to My Love” in 1987, “Let Jesus Love You” in 1995, “A Woman's Got the Powe” in 1999 and “Get Up, Get Ready” in 2011.
Education
She was educated at Texas Southern University and Berklee College of Music. She holds a Doctor of Music degree.
Family
Jennifer is the offspring of Omie Lee Holliday and Jennie Eaton. In 1991, she got married to Billy Meadows. That same year, the marriage ended in a divorce. Two years later, she tied the knot a second time with Rev. Andre Woods. The marriage failed to work and the following year, she divorced again.
Awards
In 1982, she won the Theatre Awards for "Outstanding Broadway Debut". Also, she was the winner of the Tony Award for “Best Lead Actress in a Musical” and the Drama Desk Award for “Outstanding Actress in a Musical” in that same year. The following year, she was the recipient of the Grammy Awards for “Best Female R&B Vocal Performance”. In 1986, she won another Grammy Award for “Best Inspirational Performance”.
