About Jelly Roll Morton
Jelly Roll Morton was the professional name of American musician Ferdinand Joseph LaMothe. After performing at a number of clubs, the highly-rated musician shot to stardom in 1915 when he composed his hit song titled "Jelly Roll Blues".
His other popular compositions included "Wolverine Blues" and “"King Porter Stomp". Aside from composing songs, he was also a bandleader and pianist.
Family
His parents Louise Monette and F.P. Lamothe separated when he was only three years old. He took the name of his stepfather, William Mouton, which he styled as Morton. In 1928, he settled with Mabel Bertrand.
Recognitions
He’s a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and Louisiana Music Hall of Fame inductee. He was posthumously honored with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
Trivia
He was stabbed in 1938 but survived later.
At one stage, he worked at the famous Music Box club.
