About Jefferson Pérez
The former race walker became an Olympic champion in the 20km race walk in 1996. Following his retirement, he established a foundation to cater to the needs of deprived young Ecuadorians.
Background
Born in El Vecino in Cuenca Ecuador, his passion for race-walking started to emerge back in high school days. The sportsman attended the University of Azuay.
Early Career
He trained with an athletic group under Luis Munoz. He was appointed as an Ecuadorian sport ambassador to New York and London.
Later Career
In 1992, he grabbed the Junior World winner title at the Seoul Championships. Four years later, at the Atlanta Olympic Games, he earned a gold medal. His last appearance was at the IAAF Race Walking Challenge in Murcia.
