Education
Jeff performed in his school’s stage plays at the Erasmus Hall High School, where he read arts for a year and then took a layout artist job to save $18 a week for further drama studies at New York’s Feagin School of Dramatic Arts.
Personal Life
With actress Marjorie Hoshelle, he had two daughters and, after divorce in 1958, he had a love affair with Gloria DeHaven.
In 1961, he died from blood infection caused by back injuries during a baseball game with some soldiers on the “Merrill Marauders” cast.
Career Highlights
Jeff founded three production companies, including Earlmar and August and acted for Columbia Pictures in such roles as Eve Arden in “Our Miss Brook”, which rewarded him with yet another lead role in the Universal Pictures’ “Sword in the Desert”.
20th Century Fox, Warner Bros. and many other firms tapped into Jeff’s popularity, staring him in many box office hits.
Awards
Among others, he was an Academy Awards nominee for Best Supporting Actor in 1950 for playing Cochise.
Trivia
Jeff served four years as a lieutenant in the US army during World War II (WWII) after which he got a forehead scar from injuries in a traffic accident.
