Family
She was born to Irene and Leo Seely. She wed singer Hank Cochran in 1969 and they were divorced in 1981. In 2010, she married Gene Ward.
Education
She studied at Townville High School and later attended the American Institute of Banking.
Musical Career
During the early 1960s, Seely worked as a secretary at Liberty Records and Imperial Records in Hollywood. While working there, she wrote “Anyone Who Knows What Love Is (Will Understand)” which was released as a single by R&B singer Irma Thomas in 1964. She also worked as a songwriter for the record label Four Star Music.
In 1980, she played the role of Jeannie in the American drama film “Honeysuckle Rose”. She appeared as Mrs. Jenkins in the 2002 “Changing Hearts”. She also featured in the documentary “Country Music”, which was made by American filmmaker Ken Burns in September 2019.
Honors
The singer was given an award by Billboard magazine in 2018 for her song "Anyone Who Knows What Love Is (Will Understand)”. The song also won a Grammy Award for “Best Female Country Vocal Performance” in 1970.
Seely was also the recipient of an honorary degree from Lincoln Memorial University in Tennessee.
She was inducted into the Music City Walk of Fame in 2018.
