About Jean Racine
Jean-Baptiste Racine was a 17th-century French dramatist, considered as one of the three great playwrights in France. He played a major role in the elevation of Western tradition and literature in general. Racine originally was a tragedian playwright with only one comedy literature in his repertoire, “Les Plaideurs”.
Early Life
Born in 1639, in La Ferté-Milon (Aisne), province of Picardy, France, young Racine grew up an orphan from the age of four when his father died 3 years after the death of his mother. He was looked after by his grandparents after his tragic loss.
He later lived in a convent with his grandmother, Marie des Moulins, after the death of his grandfather in 1649. At Petites écoles de Port-Royal, Racine got a classical education.
Work Review
Racine style of poetry is part of the development of French literature and the intrinsic use of the alexandrine poetic line makes his poetry meticulously clever and better, although his works met some criticisms.
His plays, “Britannicus” (1669) and “Mithridate” (1673) were two of Racine's most criticized tragedy literature. According to some of his critics, one of the issues they find problematic with his works of literature/plays was the fact that it lacks historical accuracy.
Racine's take on literature in the 17th-century transcends into the elements of a perfect Western play in terms of tragedy.
