About Jean-Paul Marat
Jean-Paul Marat was a French revolutionary leader, politician, radical journalist and physician best remembered as one of the most important voices of the French Revolution. He established the newspaper L'Ami du peuple (The Friend of the People), which he used in fighting for the rights of the lower classes and attacking the powerful and influential in society. He was assassinated in 1793 by a woman named Charlotte Corday. His murder was later memorialized in Jacques-Louis David's iconic painting The Death of Marat.
Personal Life
He married Simonne Evrard in 1792. The marriage lasted until his assassination.
Trivia
He suffered from an unknown chronic skin disease which forced him to often spend a lot of time having medicinal baths to treat the skin infection.
He was stabbed to death while taking one of his usual medicinal baths. The last words he reportedly said after Corday plunged her knife into his chest were "Help me, my dear friend". He died shortly after uttering those words.
