About Jean Giraud
Jean Giraud was among one of the best French artists, writers, and cartoonists. He worked in the “Bandes dessinées (B.D.)” tradition, thus, a French comic art that has earned worldwide attention. Comic lovers popularly knew Giraud as “Moebius” or “Gir.”
Early life
His birthplace was Nogent-Sur Marne, Paris. During childhood, he read several comics and watched numerous “American B-movie Westerns.” These built his passion for art and drawing.
He attended and trained at Duperré School of Applied Arts, Paris. His first comic “Les Aventures de Frank et Jeremie,” was sold to Far West magazine when he was 18 years old. Between 1956 and 1958, he wrote many comic short stories for “Âmes Vaillantes” and “Fripounet et Mariette.”
Major Works
The artist’s famous works include “Blueberry” – a western comics series created with renowned writer Jean-Michel Charlier. In addition, under his alias Moebius, he created various science-fiction and fantasy comics that garnered wide attention. They included “Airtight Garage of Jerry Cornelius” and “Azach.”
Death
Giraud lived for 73 years and died in Paris, France, on March 10, 2012. The immediate death cause was a pulmonary embolism; however, he had been battling cancer for years. His funeral saw many dignitaries, and he was buried at Montparnasse Cemetery, Paris.
