About Jean-Claude Duvalier
Jean-Claude Duvalier was a Haitian politician who served as his country’s President from April 1971 to February 1986. He became the youngest president in the world at 19 years old when in 1971, he succeeded his father following the latter’s death. His time in office was marked by incessant allegations of corruption and the torturing and killings of thousands of Haitians. He lived a very lavish lifestyle while millions of Haitians lived in poverty. He was overthrown during the Anti-Duvalier protest.
Family Life
His father, Francois Duvalier assumed office when he (Claude) was six years old. His mother’s name was Simone Ovide. In 1980, he married Michele Bennett, a divorcee. The wedding ceremony reportedly cost US$ 2 million and was financed by the state. They had two children and they separated in 1990, four years after the couple had fled to France.
Death
He was arrested after returning to Haiti in 2011, having been in exile for 25 years. He was later charged with corruption and funds misappropriation. He died of a heart attack on October 4, 2014.
