About Jean Charest
Before going into politics, Jean Charest worked as a lawyer. He was called to the bar in 1981 and three years later, he was elected into the House of Commons. He held his first ministerial position in 1986 under the Brian Mulroney-led administration.
Between 1986 and 1993, he served in a number of political positions including Minister of the Environment, and Minister of Industry, Science and Technology. In 1993, while with the Conservative Party, Charest became Canada’s Deputy Prime Minister, a position he held for five months. In 2003, he was selected as the Premier of Quebec and served until 2012.
Family
His original name is John James Charest and he was raised by his parents Claude Charest and Rita Leonard. In 1980 the politician tied the knot with Michèle Dionne. His children are called Amélie, Alexandra, and Antoine.
Education
He read law at the Université de Sherbrooke.
