Born in Matanzas Province, Cuba, he first received training in basketball at a sports school in Cuba.
Career Facts
He was in his mid-teens when he gained national acclaim for setting a new world record by clearing 2.33 metres. He reached another milestone six years later at the Central American and Caribbean Championships held in San Juan. At that event, he eclipsed the 2.44-metre mark. The 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympic Games witnessed another win for him as he received the gold medal.

He got engaged to Amaya Gonzalez. He has 5 children.
