About Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale
Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale was an influential Sikh preacher who served as the head of an orthodox Sikh institution known as Damdami Taksal. An advocate of the list of demands (Anandpur Sahib Resolution) made by the Shiromani Akali Dal (a Punjabi Sikh party), he rose to prominence through his participation in the Sikh-Nirankari clash of 1978. He resurfaced in 1982 with the Dharam Yuddh Morcha, a political movement calling for the creation of an independent Punjab. He is regarded as a controversial figure by many Indians for endorsing secessionism in a militant way.
Family Life
He grew up as the seventh of the eight children of Joginder Singh, a local Sikh leader and farmer and Nihal Kaur. He had two sons with his wife, Pritam Kaur.
Death
He died on June 6, 1984 during Operation Blue Star, a military action organized with the aim of removing him and his flowers from government buildings they had been occupying.
