Renowned Finnish ice hockey player Jari Kurri was the first Finnish to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001.
Background
Kurri was married to Tiina and they had twin sons. After his divorce, he married Vanessa Forsman, a former Miss Finland and had three daughters with her.
Kurri’s partnership with Wayne Gretzky
He made his professional debut with the pro ice hockey team Jokerit in the Finnish Elite League – SM-Liiga. After some detailed planning, the Edmonton Oilers drafted Jari, and paired him up with Wayne Gretzky; nick-named “The Great One'' for his outstanding dexterity. Jari and Wayne were arguably the most feared hockey attackers in the league at the time. Their chemistry on the ice was remarkable.
With 601 goals, 797 assists and 1,398 points, the remarkable athlete retired as the highest scoring National Hockey League player with a full European background.
After leaving the game, the Hockey Hall-of-Famer was appointed General Manager for the Finnish national men's ice hockey team.
Achievements
Jari Kurri was designated one of the “100 Greatest NHL Players” in 2017.
In his playing career, he won the coveted Stanley Cup 5 times.
