About János Kádár
Depending on which side of the political aisle one belongs, Hungary’s last communist leader, János Kádár could be considered as a “moderate” leader or a “hardliner”.
Early Life
He was born in Fiume (present-day Croatia) in 1912 to a poor single mother. He worked as a mechanic and was involved in trade union activities which led him to join the illegal Hungarian Communist Party in 1931. Kádár was arrested several times for his activities with the party, however, after the invasion of Hungary by the Red Army, this activist was appointed deputy head of Budapest's new police service.
Later Life
In 1950, Kádár was arrested and put on a show trial for conspiring with Marshal Tito, then-President of Yugoslavia. He was sentenced to life in prison. However, he was released in 1954 after Joseph Stalin died.
Kádár was selected by the Soviet Union to lead Hungry after the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. Yielding to Soviet’s pressure, Kádár executed many revolutionaries, including many of his close associates. However, during his term, Hungary fared better than the other Eastern Bloc countries because of higher standard of living and more relaxed travel restrictions.
The Hungarian leader served as the General Secretary of the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party for 32 years and retired in 1988 due to declining health.
Death
Kádár died July 6, 1989 from cancer.
Trivia
