Janet Munro, originally named Janet Neilson Horsburgh, was a sensational 20th-century English actress. She is widely remembered for her works with Disney films and her role in the Golden Globe Award-winning film “Darby O’Gill and the Little People.”
Background & Early Life
She was born in Blackpool, Lancashire, to renowned Scottish comedian Alexander Horsburgh (stage name Alex Munro) and Phyllis Robertshaw.
During her youth, her father wanted her to join him in his comedy career fully. However, she refused his offer and pursued her dream of becoming a professional actress.
In the early 1950s, she worked as a stage manager for a repertory company and soon landed several acting roles.
Career Highlights
She earned her big break as an actress in 1958 when she starred as the main female character in the popular Disney film “Darby O’Gill and the Little People.” The role earned her a “Golden Globe Award.” Additionally, Disney was very impressed with her performance, and they eventually signed a five-year contract with her. She then starred in two other Disney films, “Swiss Family Robinson” and “Third Man on the Mountain.”
She made her television debut in the USA on “Hallmark Hall of Fame.” She also earned a BAFTA Best Female Actor nomination for her leading role in “Life for Ruth (1962).”
Death
She died suddenly at age 38 on December 6, 1972, after being diagnosed with ischaemic heart disease.
