Toback was born on November 23, 1944, as an only child to an upper-class family. Upon graduation from Harvard College, he started working at Esquire Magazine, where he wrote about football great and actor Jim Brown.
Career
Toback struggled with addiction which was the inspiration for his screenplay “The Gambler” (1974) which portrayed James Caan as an impulsive gambler. Following the success of his first project, he directed the crime drama “Fingers” in 1978. This New Yorker has worked on high-budget films like “Exposed” to low-budget single-setting films like “Two Girls and a Guy” which starred Robert Downey Jr. Toback’s career faced a downturn at the start of the millennium. Following the emergence of the MeToo movement in 2017, Toback was accused of sexual misconduct by over 30 women but was not officially charged.
Personal Life
He married Stephanie Kemp in 1992 and they have a son together.
