About James Monroe
James Monroe was an American politician best known for being the fifth President of the United States, who served as President from 1817 to 1825. Prior to becoming President, he held a number of important positions, including the post of Governor of Virginia and the United States Secretary of War. Under President James Madison, he also served as the 7th United States Secretary of State. He was the last Founding Father of the United States to become President of the nation.
Personal Life
He was married to Elizabeth Kortright from 1786 until her death in 1830. Three children were born to the marriage.
Trivia
He fought in the Battle of Trenton and almost died after sustaining a severe injury when a musket ball violently struck him in the shoulder.
The capital city of Liberia, Monrovia, was named after him.
