About James Michael Curley
Despite being counted among the most controversial of politicians, the Irish-American mayor and congressman also made the list of the most prominent and most well-liked politicians in the history of Boston. Curley, a Democrat, served as the 55th governor of Massachusetts.
Background
The son of Irish immigrants who settled in Boston, Curley attended the local public school. In his mid-teens, he dropped out of school to work in a factory in Boston and later in a bakers’ and confectioners' supply firm. He also got involved in real estate.
Political Life
Driven by the desire to promote the welfare of Irish immigrants, he entered politics and was elected as a member of the Boston Common Council in 1900. He became a member of the U.S. House of Representatives for 3 years and served 3 terms as the mayor of Boston. The statesman entered the Massachusetts governorship race in 1934 and assumed office the following year. During his tenure, he helped resolve challenges that came with the Great Depression. Until his death in 1958, he was a member of the State Labor Relations Commission.
Pop Culture
Curley inspired the main character, Frank Skeffington, in Edward O'Connor's 1956 novel, “The Last Hurrah.”
Legacy
Two statues were erected in his honor at Faneuil Hall in Boston, Massachusetts.
