About James "Jim" Bowie
James Bowie continues to remain a Texan folk hero more than a century after his death. Even before the Battle of the Alamo, in which he was killed, the slave trader-turned-soldier had gained repute of his dexterity with the knife, later came to be known as the Bowie knife, in fights. This reputation of his stemmed from the Sandbar Fight in which he was reported to have used a large knife to kill the Rapides Parish sheriff in spite of having been stabbed and shot. He is known to have been influential in the Texas Revolution.
Family Life
He was the last but one of the ten children of Elve Ap-Catesby and Rezin Bowie. In 1833, he married Maria Ursula de Veramendi, with whom he went on to have two children. She and both children died from a cholera epidemic in September 1833.
Death
He died on 6 March 1836 during the “Battle of the Alamo”.
