About James Gavin
James Gavin was a major general of the U.S. Army during the infamous Second World War. He joined the military in 1924 at age 17. He went on to serve in different positions before he was promoted to the major general rank in 1944.
Eleven years later, he was made a lieutenant general in the Army. During his career, he commanded many troops including the 82nd Airborne Division, and the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment.
Other works
Aside from his service in the military, Gavin also served as a diplomat. In 1961, United States’ President John F. Kennedy appointed him as the country’s Ambassador to France.
Family
He was the son of James Nally and Katherine Ryan. However, he was raised by his adopted parents Mary and Martin Gavin who christened him James Maurice Gavin. In 1948, a year after divorcing Irma Baulsir, he got married to Jean Emert Duncan. The ex-military man had five kids.
Education
He was trained at the United States Military Academy.
Honors
Gavin was the recipient of many medals including the Distinguished Service Cross, and the Distinguished Service Medal.
Trivia
During WWII, he became the youngest person to serve as a major general in the U.S. Army.
He made a lawyer sign on his form after he realized that his guardians wouldn’t be in support of him joining the military.
He was nicknamed "the jumping general".
Growing up, he sold newspapers.
