Having played Will Smith’s Uncle Phil in the 90’s hit sitcom, “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” to rank number 34 in TV Guide’s “50 Greatest TV Dads of All Time”, Avery starred as Alonzo Sparks in UPN’s comedy series “Sparks” and played voice roles such as Shredder in “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”.
Education and Early Jobs
He was a Drama and Literature graduate of Thurgood Marshall College at UC San Diego after which he was invited to speak at their 2007 and 2012 graduation ceremonies.
After serving a year in the U.S Navy during the Vietnam War, he moved to San Diego to write poems and screenplays for PBS where he won an Emmy.
Career Highlights
Avery starred in a number of 1980s films, including NBC’s “Hill Street Blues”. He also had roles in TV series in the 1990s, including as Rev. Hicks in “For Your Love” and as Malcolm Avalon in “Where on Earth Is Carmen Sandiego?”
Family and Death
In 1988, he married Barbara who already had a son called Kevin Waters.
The veteran actor died of complications after a heart surgery in December 2013 at age 68. The ashes of his cremated body were blown near the Pacific Ocean. Former co-stars, including Janet Hubert and Will Smith, gave heartfelt tributes and held a memorial via video conference for him in 2020.
