About James Abbott McNeill Whistler
James Abbott McNeill Whistler was one of the celebrated painters between 1870 and 1900, a period known in the United States as the “Gilded Age”. His works were mostly categorized under the "art for art's sake" philosophy where artists based their works on political and moral functions.
He found a way to combine art and music which made him label some of his works as "arrangements" and "harmonies". He also coined the term "nocturnes paintings" which described a style of painting showing night scenes or subjects appearing in lights.
