About Jacob Burckhardt
A 19th century forerunner to cultural history, Jacob Burckhardt became the object of critical appreciation for his 1860 book “Die Kultur der Renaissance in Italien”, which cleverly examined Italy in its renaissance period.
Early Life
Born into a thriving family in Basel, Switzerland, he developed an obsession with Italian culture and history at an early age. He studied at the University of Basel, the University of Berlin and eventually, the University of Bonn.
Politics
In the first three decades of life he was liberal, politically speaking. However, he came to detest what liberalism could mean in Switzerland and Germany after he witnessed the chaos created by the return of the Jesuit to the Catholic cantons. 1843 witnessed his return to Basel where he taught art history at the university and officially became the first art historian in Switzerland.
Cultural History
He was most influential in the way he perceived and taught history. For him, history included politics, economics and everyday life.
Legacy
A medal was posthumously commissioned in his memory.
