About Jack Swigert
Jack Swigert became a member of the United States Air Force after graduating from the university. He later joined the Air National Guard and served at the Connecticut, and Massachusetts centers. In 1966, he had the opportunity to serve in NASA as a member of the Astronaut Corps.
Four years later, he partook in the famous moon mission as one of the astronauts in the Apollo 13 spacecraft, replacing Ken Mattingly. He would be remembered as the first person to alert the Houston base after the craft they were traveling in developed a problem. After almost six days, he together with Jim Lovell, and Fred Haise, returned to Earth.
Political career
In 1973, he served in the United States House of Representatives’ Committee on Science and Astronautics as its executive director. His political journey started four years later when he opted to contest for a place in the U.S. Senate in 1978. His bid was unsuccessful as he lost to Bill Armstrong.
Known to be a member of the Republican Party, he was elected into the U.S. Congress in 1982, but was unable to serve in the House following his death some months before his swearing-in.
Family
He was born to John Leonard Sr., an ophthalmologist, and his wife Virginia Swigert.
Education
After leaving East High School, he joined the University of Colorado where he studied mechanical engineering. He later attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and the University of Hartford.
Awards
He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1970. He was also decorated with the NASA Distinguished Service Medal. He was selected into the famous International Space Hall of Fame in 1982, and became a member of the Colorado Aviation Hall of Fame six years later.
Fun Facts
In his leisure time, he usually played handball, basketball, and golf.
He was also known to be a good photographer.
