About Jack Johnson
Jack was a successful American professional boxer. He won the hearts of many boxing lovers across the globe shortly after making his professional debut in 1898. Throughout his illustrious career, Johnson competed with some of the popular names in the sport such as Joe Choynski, Charley Brooks, and John W. Haynes.
In 1910, Johnson came up with boxing great, James J. Jeffries, in a fight which was termed as “The Fight of the Century”.
Family
He married his first wife, Etta Duryea, in 1911 but lost her the following year after she committed suicide. In 1912, he wedded Lucille Cameron, but broke up with her in 1924. Before his death, he was married to Irene Pineau.
Achievements
In 1908, Johnson won the world heavyweight boxing championship, making him the first black American to achieve that feat.
In 1954, his name was added to the Boxing Hall of Fame.
He was listed among the “100 Greatest African Americans”.
Trivia
He died in a car crash in 1946; he was 68 years old.
He was nicknamed the “Galveston Giant”.
In 1912, Johnson was arrested and charged for "transporting women across state lines for immoral purposes" which was against the Mann Act. He was eventually sentenced to a year imprisonment.
