About Jack Coombs
Known for his excellent and impressive pitching skills, Jack Coombs reached the peak of his career in 1910, when his unhittable pitches helped the Philadelphia Athletics win the World Series.
Baseball Career
Shortly after graduating, Coombs joined the Athletics and his 1910 season with the team is regarded as one of the best in Major League Baseball history. Towards the end of his career, he also played for the Brooklyn Robins and the Detroit Tigers. After retiring, he became a coach at Duke University and published the book, “Baseball-Individual Play and Team Strategy”. Coombs also appeared in baseball-related films and documentaries.
Highlights
He was a three-time World Series champion while playing for the Athletics. Coombs was also a two-time AL wins leader and was inducted into the Philadelphia Baseball Hall of Fame. The baseball fields at Colby and Duke Universities were named after him.
