About Jack Buck
Jack Buck was a celebrated hall-of-famer in American sportscasting.
Early Years
Buck was the third out of seven children. His parents were Kathleen and Earle Buck.
He was drafted into the army to fight in World War II at age 19.
After an honorary discharge from the army after sustaining a non-fatal battle wound, he enrolled in the University of Ohio, and soon after joined a local radio station.
He married his college sweetheart, Alyce Larson, a year before he graduated. They had six children together. After his divorce, he later married Carole Lintzenich, with whom he had two children.
Sportscasting Career
Fresh out of college, and with a flair for broadcasting, Buck was hired as an announcer for a minor league affiliate – the Columbus Redbirds.
He soon joined the famous St. Louis Cardinals broadcasting team as a baseball commentator in the mid-1950s. In 1963, CBS invited him to announce for the National Football League.
The Massachusetts-born sportscaster is privileged to have called some of the greatest moments in American sports history.
Accomplishments and Honors
The legendary sportscaster won many awards including; the Ford C. Frick Award for Excellence in Broadcasting from the National Baseball Hall of Fame [1987].
In 1995, he was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame.
For his contribution to the sport, he was inducted into the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame Museum.
In his very distinguished career, he was a 22-time winner of the Missouri Sportscaster of the Year from the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.
In 1990, he was inducted into the American Sportscasters Association Hall of Fame.
He has a star on the St. Louis Walk of Fame.
The Missouri Athletic Club set up the Jack Buck Award in honor of the legendary sportscaster. The award is given to broadcasters that have distinguished themselves in the profession.
Death
At a hospital in Missouri, Jack Buck died at 77 from a combination of sicknesses.
