She was married to Juan Peron, the former president, and served as both vice president and First Lady during her husband's third term in office as president, between 1973 and 1974. Following her husband's death, she assumed the presidential seat. Her reign in government was marked by political bloodshed and economic turmoil until she was toppled by the military.
