About Irving Berlin
Irving Berlin was a celebrated Russian-born American songwriter regarded as one of the greatest American songwriters of all time. In a career that lasted over half a century, he composed in the region of 1,500 songs. Some of his most famous songs include White Christmas, God Bless America and Easter Parade.
Personal Life
His first marriage was to Dorothy Goetz in 1912. The marriage ended that same year with Dorothy's death from typhoid. His second marriage was to Ellin Mackay in 1926. The marriage produced four children and lasted for 63 years.
Achievements
Throughout his career, he amassed numerous awards, including a Congressional Gold Medal and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. In 1977, U.S. President Gerald Ford honored him with the highly prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Trivia
On the day of the September 11 terrorist attacks, members of the United States Congress came together and passionately sang his American patriotic song God Bless America.
