She was the first female Prime Minister of India from 1966 to 1977, when she died. She is the second-longest serving Prime Minister of the country and the only woman to date to hold this position.
She was the leader of the war of independence in East Pakistan, which resulted in the creation of Bangladesh.

She was married to Feroze Gandhi and they had 2 children. She was assassinated at the age of 66 by her 2 bodyguards, Satwant Singh and Beant Singh. Kehar Singh was arrested for conspiracy in the attack, while Satwant and Kehar were sentenced to death.
