About Ignacy Jan Paderewski
A musical legend and an astute politician, Ignacy Jan Paderewski was a Polish-born pianist and composer best remembered for his deeds as a former prime minister of Poland and an advocate for the independence of Poland which led to the creation of the Treaty of Versailles during the end of World War I.
Early life
Paderewski was born to Polish parents; his father, Jan Paderewski, worked as an administrator of a number of estates. He however lost his mother a few months after his birth.
Personal life
Paderewski married Antonina Korsakówna, a fellow colleague at the conservatory and together they had a son named Alfred. Alfred was born handicapped and he lost his mother a few weeks later after his birth. In 1899, he married Helena Paderewska.
Career and Achievements in Politics
Meeting then popular Polish actress Helena Modrzejewska in 1884, aided Paderewski in the pursuit of his music career by raising funds for further studies in piano. He later studied with Theodor Leschetizky in Vienna, Austria.
In 1887, Paderewski debuted in Vienna and his fantastic performance earned him the place as one of the most popular and successful performers in Europe and America.
Politically, Paderewski was an advocate for the independence of Poland and worked to bring about the Treaty of Versailles during World War I.
Cause of Death
On June 29, 1941, Paderewski suffered from complications of pneumonia and died. He was 80 years old.
