About Huey P. Newton
Huey P. Newton became famous for his civil and political rights activism. He pushed for the liberation of the African-American community through the Black Panther Party, which he co-founded in 1966. He also spearheaded survival programmes such as food banks, Free Breakfast for Children, medical clinics and ambulance services while serving as the party’s leader.
Family Life
He was born to Walter Newton and Armelia Johnson. His family moved from Monroe, Louisiana, to Oakland, California when he was young because of increased hate crimes against blacks. He was married to Gwen Fontaine from 1974 until 1983. In 1984, he got married to Fredrika Newton.
Violence Allegations
Although he was made to stand trial for charges of assault against his tailor and the murder of a prostitute in the 1870s, no evidence or testimony was found to put him in jail.
Assassination
He was shot and killed by Tyrone Robinson, a member of the Black Guerrilla Family, on 22 August 1989.
