Hilary Whitehall Putnam was his full name, and he was one of the greatest American philosophers and mathematicians of all time. He made profound contributions to analytic philosophy, philosophy of – science, mind, logic, language, and mathematics.

He was of Jewish and American descent. The philosopher was born in Chicago, Illinois. However, he lived in France with his family from infancy until he was eight when they moved to Philadelphia, USA.
Putnam attended Central High School in Philadelphia and held a philosophy degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Additionally, he studied philosophy for his graduate studies at Harvard University and later received his Ph.D. in philosophy from UCLA in 1951.
Career & Contributions
Between 1951 and 1965, he lectured at the philosophy departments of Princeton University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Northwestern University. Additionally, between 1965 and 2000, he lectured philosophy at Harvard University and retired as a Professor Emeritus.
His notable contributions in mathematics and philosophy included his collaboration with Martin Davis to develop the famous "Davis-Putnam algorithm" and his profound demonstration of the unsolvable nature of "Hilbert's tenth problem."
He was active in anti war movements in the 1960s, opposing the United States' involvement in the Vietnam War.
Death
He died aged 89 on March 13, 2016, in Arlington, Massachusetts.
