About Hetty Green
Henrietta “Hetty” Howland Robinson Green was an American financier who was known to be “the wealthiest woman in the world.” She was also nicknamed “the Witch of Wall Street”. She was also called the “greatest miser” by the Guinness Book of World Records.
Early Life
Green was born to Edward Mott Robinson and Abby Howland. Her father was a successful whaling agent and oil manufacturer. At a young age, Green was taught to read the financial pages from the newspaper by her father and grandfather. When she turned eight, she opened her first bank account with money she had saved up.
Career
Green inherited millions of dollars from her parents and other relatives and began her career in finance and investments, using a contrarian investment strategy. She dealt mainly in real estate, railroads and mines, and lent money with high interest rates.
In 1867, she married Edward Green and they agreed to keep their finances separate, making her one of the first examples of prenuptial agreements. Despite that, she bailed him several times from debt.
Personal Life and Reputation
Although she was known to be extremely wealthy, Green had a reputation of being a spendthrift. She wore old clothes, lived in boarding houses or flats, and rode in an old carriage.
Death
She died in 1916 of apoplexy. At the time of her death, she was said to be worth between $100 and $200 million.
