About Henri Poincaré
Jules Henri Poincaré was a famous French mathematician and one of the greatest mathematicians and physicists the world has witnessed. He made brilliant contributions and theories, which lay the fundamentals to several critical concepts in mathematics and science, such as topology, chaos theory, differential equations, geometry, and electromagnetism.
Mathematicians often refer to him as “The Last Universalist” and describe him as a “polymath.”
Background & Education
He was born in Nancy, Meurthe-et-Moselle, France.
In 1871, Poincaré graduated from Lycée. He then enrolled at the École Polytechnique as their most qualified student in 1873 and graduated with excellent grades in 1874. Between November 1875 and June 1878, he studied mathematics and mining engineering at the École des Mines and received his ordinary degree as a mining engineer in 1879. Finally, in late 1879, he earned his doctorate from the University of Paris.
Scientific Contributions
Poincaré’s research on “three-body problems” made him the first physicist to point out a “chaotic deterministic system.” His discovery was the original fundamentals for the “chaos theory” in modern science.
He was also the first mathematician to present the famous “Lorentz transformations” in their modern symmetrical states in 1905. The 20th century scientific and mathematical problem “Poincaré conjecture.”
Death
He died at age 58 on 17 July 1912 after suffering from an embolism.
