About Heitor Villa-Lobos
He was a Brazilian musical icon who was a cellist, a conductor and a composer. He was also known to play other instruments.
Personal Life
He was the son of Raúl, a well-educated man who worked as a civil servant and a librarian. He was also a musician and an astronomer. He learnt music by watching his father’s musical evening events where the invited people played music. During those times, he learnt to play different musical instruments. In 1899, his father passed away and all he had learnt in music helped him make a living when he started playing at different places.
Career
He had learnt to play the clarinet, the classical guitar and cello while his father was alive but he did not know how to play the piano so his wife, Lucília Guimarães who was a pianist taught him how to play. It was around this time that he decided to take his life as a musician seriously. Some of his popular works are “Rudepoema” for piano solo in 1926, “Momoprecoce” for piano and orchestra in 1929 and “Guitar Concerto” in 1951.
Death
In November 1959, he passed away from Kidney Failure.
