About Harvey Milk
Harvey Milk was an American civil rights activist and politician who made history by becoming the first openly gay candidate to win an election for public office in California when he won a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977. Barely a year after he was sworn into office, he was assassinated by Dan White, a fellow city supervisor. In 2008, Time magazine included him in its list of the "100 most important people of the 20th century".
Family Life
He was the son of Minerva Karns and William Milk. He had an elder brother named Robert.
Trivia
In 2009, he was posthumously honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
His life and death were dramatized in the 2008 biographical film Milk, which saw actor Sean Penn portray him.
In 2014, he became the first openly gay political official to be honored with a United States Postal Service postage stamp.
