Career
He began writing at the age of 29. He wrote his first novel Hear the Wind Sing in 1979. The success of the novel motivated him to take writing more seriously. He therefore continued writing and met with his breakthrough when he published Norwegian Wood in 1987. The book sold millions of copies in Japan and instantly transformed him into a celebrity.
Awards
Over the years he has won a collection of awards and honors, including the World Fantasy Award, the Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award and the Jerusalem Prize.
