About Harry S. Truman
Harry S. Truman was the 33rd President of the United States of America, succeeding Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1945. His first notable, albeit controversial, action was the approval of the use of atomic weapons against Japan during World War II, effectively ending the conflict. During his time, he oversaw the creation of two important international bodies that would unite numerous countries: the United Nations and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
The Truman Committee
Prior to his presidency, Truman first gained attention for the formation of the United States Congressional investigative body, the Truman Committee, which aimed to investigate the behind-the-scenes corruption in wartime contracts. His work with the committee boosted him to the seat of Vice President of the United States and eventually the President.
