About Harry Hopkins
Harry Hopkins, in full Harry Lloyd Hopkins, was a great American statesman, presidential administrator and democratic administrator. He was widely known for championing the “New Deal” relief program that helped reduce USA’s unemployment rates in the 1930s.
Early Life & Education
The statesman was born in Sioux City, Iowa. He was a 1912 graduate of Grinnell College, Iowa. In 1913, he became actively involved with New York’s “New York Association for Improving the Condition of the Poor (AICP)”. In 1915, he co-founded the “Bronx Park Employment Program”, one of the USA’s earliest public employment initiatives.
Career Highlights
He was famously known as the trusted deputy to US ex-President Franklin Roosevelt. He was also the 8th US Secretary of Commerce. He directed and supervised the “New Deal” programs, the “New York Temporary Emergency Relief Administration”, “the Works Progress Administration” and the “Federal Emergency Relief Administration”. By 1938, Hopkins had directed the spending of over $8.5 million for unemployment reliefs, which aided about 15 million people during the Great Depression.
He was a member of the “Pacific War Council”, “War Production Board” and leader of the Allies’ (1941) lend-lease program during World War II. However, he primarily served as President Roosevelt’s adviser and resided in the White House during the war.
Death
He died aged 55 on January 29, 1946, after suffering from hemosiderosis.
