About Harry Cooper
Harry Cooper started his career as a professional golfer in 1923 and recorded his first victory later that year at the Galveston Open. In 1925, he got to the semi-final stage of the PGA Championship before winning the maiden edition of the Los Angeles Open the following year.
He was a runner-up at the 1936 and 1938 editions of the Masters Tournament. He controversially lost the 1936 U.S. Open to Tony Manero who was accused of receiving help from Gene Sarazen.
Despite not winning any major championship throughout his career, the English-American golfer has been regarded as one of the greatest in history of the sport.
Post retirement
After ending his playing career, Cooper joined the Metropolis Country Club as its head professional. After leaving the position in 1978, he started teaching at the New York-based Westchester Country Club.
Family
He followed in the footsteps of his parents Syd and Alice Cooper, who were both professional golfers.
Recognitions
In 1992, he was selected into the famous World Golf Hall of Fame. He also won the Vardon Trophy in 1937.
Trivia
His performance earned him the moniker the "Lighthorse Harry".
He began his career at Cedar Crest Park.
Before his death, he was one of the longest-serving members of the Professional Golfers' Association of America.
